Fisher 500-series tube stereo receivers

The 500-C is Fisher’s best-known all-tube stereo receiver of the 1960s: an FM-stereo multiplex tuner, a full preamplifier and a push-pull power amplifier using four 7591 output tubes, all on one chassis. Fisher advertised 75 watts of IHF music power, and bench figures put continuous output at roughly 30 to 35 watts per channel. Stereophile estimated that more than 100,000 were built. The FM section was strong for its day, with four IF stages, a signal-strength meter and a Stereo Beacon light that switches automatically between mono and stereo. Early units used the Golden Cascode FM front end, while later ones moved to a Nuvistor-based Golden Synchrode design. Controls include bass, treble, loudness contour, high and low filters, a tape monitor and a front headphone jack. Today it suits listeners who want tube sound from a single box and accept that a 60-year-old tube receiver needs a qualified restoration before daily use.
154 Fisher 500-Cs are listed, 13 of them for parts, and complete working or serviced ones mostly ask $1,100–1,725 delivered. Pay for documented restoration: new electrolytic and coupling capacitors, a silicon diode in place of the selenium rectifier, and a matched set of 7591 output tubes. A 500-C described only as working is still a 60-year-old tube receiver that needs that work before daily use. Red flags: a zero-feedback seller offering a cased, tested unit at $1,000, a for-parts unit that costs more delivered than a working one, and $100–150 shipping on several. The serviced $1,105 unit is the sensible buy; the $730 working one suits a buyer with a technician lined up.

Listed as working, about $730 delivered ($665 plus $65 shipping), Buy It Now, from a 99.7% seller, about $370 under the bottom of the band. Working isn't the same as restored, so ask what has been replaced and budget for a recap before daily use.
