Marantz began in 1953 when Saul Marantz turned a preamplifier he had built at home in Kew Gardens, New York, into a company. Superscope bought the company in 1964, and from 1966 Marantz products were built in Japan with Standard Radio Corp., which became Marantz Japan in 1975. The receivers in this catalog come from that Superscope era, when the brand was at its commercial peak. The early-1970s 2230, 2245 and 2270 share brushed-aluminum faces, blue-lit dials, Gyro-Touch flywheel tuning, signal and tuning meters and three-band tone controls, and the 2215B is the 15 W entry model in a similar style. The 2325 (125 W, with built-in Dolby noise reduction) and the 2385 (185 W, toroidal power supply) are the high-power units, while the 2238 represents the later B-series generation. The 1060 and 1090 are integrated amplifiers without tuners. None of these models has an oscilloscope; that feature belonged to the Model 18 and 19, the quadraphonic 4400 and the later 2500 and 2600. Service needs are typical of 50-year-old gear: oxidised switches and controls, aged electrolytic capacitors, burnt-out lamps, and bias checks after any output-stage work.
