The story
The 2385 is a 185 W per channel receiver from Marantz’s late-1970s line, made from about 1977 to 1980 and priced at roughly $1,100 when new. Marantz’s scope-equipped 2500 and 2600 sat above it, but the 2385 uses conventional signal-strength and center-tuning meters rather than an oscilloscope. Power comes from a large toroidal transformer feeding dual 6,800 µF filter capacitors, and it is rated at 185 W per channel into 8 Ω at 0.05% THD, with about 240 W per channel commonly quoted into 4 Ω. Controls include bass, mid and treble, high and low filters, loudness, two tape loops with dubbing, and pre-out/main-in jacks. US units have a socket for Marantz’s optional plug-in Dolby FM decoder, while European units dropped it and gained a second aux input, and a black faceplate was also offered. At about 58 lb it is a serious piece of hardware, and it suits buyers who want high power in late-1970s Marantz styling and are ready for a substantial service job.

Before you buy
The pre-purchase checklist
Checklist · 6 checks
- 01Ask whether the receiver has been serviced, because restorers report burnt resistors and diodes in the bias circuit on the driver board of unserviced units.
- 02Ask for current bias and DC offset readings, and treat any history of blown fuses as a warning sign.
- 03Confirm that both meters and all dial lamps light, and ask whether any lamps have been replaced with LEDs and in what color.
- 04Listen for crackle when pressing the FM, tape and monitor buttons and when turning the selectors and tone controls.
- 05On a US unit, check whether the optional Dolby FM decoder module is fitted, since most are not.
- 06At close to 60 lb it must be double boxed with heavy padding and insured for its full value.

Which one to buy
Only 40 Marantz 2385s are listed, 6 for parts, and few complete ones made the snapshot. One seller, euromaxx-wijchen, lists four identical-looking 2385s at the same $5,626 price ($5,649–5,716 delivered), so the 'typical' $5,700–5,725 band is really that one seller's price rather than a market. None of the complete units is described as serviced, and unserviced 2385s are known for burnt bias-circuit parts on the driver board, so ask for service history and current bias and DC offset readings before paying this much. Red flags: the seller name hints at a European dealer and the $7,900 unit is a European black-face version, so confirm 120V; and the $3,500 parts unit has no shipping stated on a 58 lb receiver. There is no clear value buy here; if you want one, ask the multi-unit seller which unit you would receive and what work it has had.

Most 2385s need their controls and switches cleaned, and many need dial or meter lamps. Contact cleaner is the first thing to buy; leave internal adjustments and recapping to the service manual or a technician.
