The story
The 2238 is a 38 W per channel receiver from the later generation of Marantz’s 22xx line. The original 2238 arrived around 1976 at roughly $360 and was replaced around 1977 by the 2238B, which stayed in production until about 1980 and is the version you will see for sale most often. Both use the Gyro-Touch tuning wheel, a signal-strength meter, bass, mid and treble controls, loudness, a subsonic filter, two tape connections and a front headphone jack. The B version moved the balance control from a slider to a knob next to the tone controls and consolidated the amplifier, power supply and protection circuits onto fewer boards; forum consensus rates the earlier 2238 as the more robustly built of the two. US-market 2238B units have a rear-panel receptacle for Marantz’s optional DLB-1 Dolby FM decoder module, and the European 2238BL added long-wave. It suits listeners who want late-1970s Marantz styling and moderate power at a lower price than the bigger models.

The pre-purchase checklist
Checklist · 6 checks
- 01Check whether the unit is a 2238 or a 2238B, since they use different circuit boards and parts.
- 02Work the push-button switches such as tape monitor, high filter and loudness while music plays, because restorers often find them badly oxidised.
- 03Ask whether the speaker protection relay clicks in a few seconds after power-on and whether either channel cuts in and out, which points to worn relay contacts.
- 04Ask whether bias and DC offset were checked after any amplifier repair.
- 05Confirm the signal-strength meter moves on both FM and AM, and that all dial and meter lamps light.
- 06On a US 2238B, note whether the DLB-1 Dolby module is present, since it was an optional extra and is usually missing.

Which one to buy
176 Marantz 2238s are listed, ten for parts, and most are the later 2238B; complete ones mostly ask $1,000–1,475 delivered. Check which version you're getting, since the original 2238 and the 2238B use different boards and forum consensus rates the original as the sturdier build. Ask whether the push-button switches have been cleaned and whether the protection relay holds both channels. Red flags: a zero-feedback seller with a title copied across three sellers, and a unit modified with built-in streaming at about $1,789. The tested 2238B at about $844 is the value buy; the serviced 2238B auction is worth watching.

Most 2238s need their controls and switches cleaned, and many need dial or meter lamps. Contact cleaner is the first thing to buy; leave internal adjustments and recapping to the service manual or a technician.
