The story
The SX-880 sits one step above the SX-780 in Pioneer’s SX-x80 range and replaced the SX-850. It is rated at 60 watts per channel into 8 Ω, 20 Hz–20 kHz, at 0.05% THD. The x80 generation was built much lighter than the x50 models: the SX-880 weighs about 27 lb, where the SX-850 it replaced weighed around 42 lb. It is also reported to use a discrete output stage, unlike the hybrid power modules in the SX-780 and below, which makes it easier to repair with standard transistors. Front-panel features include independent left and right power meters with black faces, a 15 Hz low-cut filter, FM muting, mono/stereo mode, loudness, two tape loops with a duplicate switch, one phono input and one aux input. Original list price was about $425. Choose the SX-880 over the 780 if your speakers need the extra headroom.
Before you buy
The pre-purchase checklist
Checklist · 6 checks
- 01Ask for a photo with the unit powered so you can see that both power meters and all dial lamps light.
- 02Confirm both power meters move with music, since a dead meter usually points to a meter-drive or lamp problem.
- 03Check that the protection relay engages and that there is no hum, crackle or channel dropout at normal volume.
- 04Rotate the tuning knob across the band to check the dial string.
- 05Listen for scratchy pots and noisy tape-monitor or speaker switches.
- 06Ask what service has been done and whether the output bias and DC offset were checked.

Which one to buy
70 SX-880s are listed, five for parts, and most complete ones ask $900–1,175 delivered. Tested units start under the band at about $844, and cleaned or serviced ones run $1,060–1,200, so a stated test or service costs little extra here. Ask for a powered-on photo showing both power meters and all dial lamps lit, and whether bias and DC offset were checked. Red flags: two zero-feedback sellers, one at $550 with no shipping stated, and a wood-cased unit at about $1,246 with no working claim. The cleaned and tested $1,062 unit is the best balance of price and evidence.

About $890 delivered with Best Offer, but 'nice shape' is cosmetic; ask whether it has been tested.

Most SX-880s need their controls and switches cleaned, and many need dial or meter lamps. Contact cleaner is the first thing to buy; leave internal adjustments and recapping to the service manual or a technician.
