SansuiModel AU-717 · Integrated amp
The story
The AU-717 is the best-known model in Sansui’s AU-x17 range and the one most collectors look for. Sansui rated it at 85 W per channel into 8 Ω from 20 Hz to 20 kHz at no more than 0.025% THD, and it weighs about 39 lb. The reason it is heavier than its rating suggests is the power supply: it uses two separate power transformers, each feeding its own rectifier and filter capacitors, so each channel effectively has its own supply. The amplifier is DC-coupled, with a quoted frequency response extending down to DC, and the preamp gives you two moving-magnet phono inputs, bass and treble controls with selectable turnover frequencies and a tone-defeat switch, subsonic and high filters, two tape loops with dubbing, and pre-out/main-in jacks. It was sold from about 1977 to 1979 alongside the matching TU-717 tuner. It has the power and current reserve to drive most home speakers comfortably, including less efficient modern designs.
Before you buy
The pre-purchase checklist
Checklist · 7 checks
- 01Ask whether the speaker protection relay clicks in after a few seconds and whether either channel drops out or crackles at low volume, since a tired relay is a common fault on these.
- 02Look at interior photos for the hardened glue Sansui used on large capacitors and boards, which can turn corrosive and damage nearby component leads; it should be removed during a proper service.
- 03Ask for the DC offset at each speaker output and whether the output stage idle current has been set to the service manual figure.
- 04Work every control: the volume, balance and tone controls, the selector and the tape switches all collect dirt and crackle after 40 years.
- 05Ask whether the electrolytic capacitors have been replaced, and by whom, because replacing aged capacitors on the power supply and regulator boards is the core of a proper AU-717 service.
- 06Confirm both phono inputs work with a turntable.
- 07At close to 40 lb it is easily damaged in transit, so ask for double boxing and check photos for bent rack handles.

Which one to buy
71 results come up for the AU-717, and the complete amps mostly ask $1,375–1,575 delivered, with recapped units sitting right in that band. Replacing the power-supply and regulator capacitors is the core of a proper AU-717 service, and two recapped units cost about $1,395 and $1,558 delivered, so there is little reason to pay similar money for an unserviced one. Also ask about the protection relay, the DC offset and whether Sansui's hardened glue was removed. Red flags: a zero-feedback seller at about $1,188, a 95.8% seller, and a 'tested working' unit at about $3,083, roughly double the band.

Noisy volume and tone controls and crackly selector switches are the usual first job on a used AU-717. Contact cleaner fixes most of it; bias and offset adjustments belong to the service manual or a technician.
