Technics SU-V New Class A integrated amplifiers · c. 1979–1983
The SU-V8 is a high-power model in Technics’ SU-V integrated amplifier range, released in Japan in December 1979. Technics rated it at 110 watts per channel into 8 ohms from 20 Hz to 20 kHz, with THD quoted at 0.003% at 3 dB below rated output. Its headline feature is Technics’ “New Class A” output stage: a synchronous bias circuit keeps the output transistors from switching off, which Technics marketed as eliminating switching and crossover distortion while running far cooler than true class A. Despite the badge, it is not a pure class-A amplifier. The rest of the design follows the era’s high-end checklist: DC-coupled “Straight DC” circuitry, separate power supplies for each channel, moving-magnet and moving-coil phono inputs, a Super Bass control and automatic speaker protection. At about 35 pounds it is a substantial box. It suits buyers who want a powerful, well-specified early-80s Japanese integrated with a built-in MC stage, and who are comfortable having the idle current set by a technician.

Until we do, search eBay for the exact model number and use the checklist above on every listing: ask for photos of it powered on, and a note of what has been serviced.
Noisy volume and tone controls and crackly selector switches are the usual first job on a used SU-V8. Contact cleaner fixes most of it; bias and offset adjustments belong to the service manual or a technician.
