The story
The KR-9600 is the flagship of Kenwood’s KR-x600 receiver line. Kenwood launched the line in spring 1976 with models from the KR-2600 up to the KR-7600, and the KR-9600 was added above them later that year. It is rated at 160 watts per channel into 8 Ω, 20 Hz–20 kHz, at 0.08% THD, and weighs about 53 lb. Kenwood’s main design feature was a separate power supply for each channel, which it promoted as a way to reduce crosstalk between channels. Other features include two phono inputs with separate equalizer stages, three-band tone controls (bass, midrange and treble) with a defeat switch, two-deck tape dubbing with a tape-through circuit, and a microphone input with Kenwood’s Sound Injection mixing. The meters are two power meters, a combined signal-strength/deviation meter and a center-tuning meter. A walnut cabinet was an optional extra, not standard. It is a true 1970s high-power receiver and needs the care that goes with one.

The pre-purchase checklist
Checklist · 6 checks
- 01Ask for a powered-on photo showing all dial and meter lamps lit and both power meters responding to music.
- 02Confirm the protection relay clicks in and stays in at moderate volume, and that neither channel cuts out or hums.
- 03Ask whether the output transistors are original and whether bias and DC offset were set during service.
- 04Listen for crackle on the volume, balance and three tone controls and on the speaker and tape switches.
- 05Do not expect a wood case, since the cabinet was sold separately, and confirm in the photos whether one is included.
- 06A 53 lb receiver needs heavy double boxing or freight, so ask exactly how it will be packed.

Which one to buy
105 KR-9600s are listed, three for parts, and complete ones cluster tightly at $2,475–2,650 delivered. At that money, buy one that has been serviced: a 53 lb, 160 W receiver needs its bias and DC offset set, and here a serviced unit costs no more than a tested one. Ask exactly how it will be packed, since heavy double boxing or freight is the norm. Red flags: a zero-feedback seller asking $1,499 for a working unit with its original box, and one priced at about $5,817, more than double the going rate. The no-bid auction at about $1,327 is worth watching, but it will climb.

The title says it powers on and all works; it will climb, so set a cap below the $2,475 band floor and ask about bias and packing.

Most KR-9600s need their controls and switches cleaned, and many need dial or meter lamps. Contact cleaner is the first thing to buy; leave internal adjustments and recapping to the service manual or a technician.
